About The Pattern, In The Designer's Words
One of the unique and interesting attributes of the shore is the variety of colorfully painted victorian houses, known as “painted ladies.” The Seashells Shawl is based on these beautiful multicolor houses in the small beach towns along the Jersey shore.
Constructed from the top down, the pattern uses a combination of stacked stitches and short rows to create the shell shapes in the colorwork section. A lace border is then added to edge to finish off the classic look. This pattern can be knit with any multiple of 22 + 5 stitches, so the size can be altered to fit your needs. I’ve also uploaded a coloring page so that you can plan your layout before you begin to knit.
Pattern Stats
Finished Size: 79 x 30˝ (200 x 76 cm)
Yarn: Any of MollyGirl's fingering weight yarns will work perfectly! You'll need 1 100g skein each of 3 colors.
Needles: Size 5 (3.5mm) 40˝ circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Size 6 (4mm) 40˝ circular needles.
Gauge: Swatch in pattern on smaller needles starting with 71 sts. Bind off instead of working border.
Swatch should measure 11 x 5˝ (28 x 13 cm) after blocking.
Other Materials: Stitch markers, sewing needle, blocking surface, pins.
Xandy Peters is a knitting designer and teacher, best known as the innovator of the stacked stitch technique and for the Fox Paws pattern. Starting out as a footwear and product designer, Xandy turned to knitting as a way to explore textiles and surfaces without using factory production and has since made a career out of publishing new patterns and teaching workshops.
